SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

OPENING KEYNOTE: Lori-Ann Muenzer - Olympic Gold Medallist

At 38 years of age, Lori-Ann Muenzer was the underdog in cycling at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, but as far she was concerned, she was just getting started. Balancing working full-time and training full-time, Lori-Ann was a force the cycling world had not seen before.

In a cycling career that has spanned twenty years, Lori-Ann has seen it all. The glory of winning more than a dozen national titles, but there has been defeat and injuries too. Instead of quitting, she raised the bar. A story of personal challenges, physical setbacks, and an unbelievable drive for success has earned Lori-Ann Canada’s
1st and only Olympic Gold Medal in cycling and a permanent place in the history books.

Lori-Ann continues to nurture the dreams of young cyclists through her involvement with the “Lori-Ann Muenzer Program”, she also serves on the board of the Canadian Tire JumpStart Program, and is also the author of One Gear, No Breaks.

Lori-Ann balances her time working with clients locally and nationally as a speaker and trainer, providing energized, think outside your comfort zone training for conferences, organizations, business owners, and entrepreneurs.

CLOSING KEYNOTE: Generational Differences: Are They Affecting You?
Presenter: Bill Isley

Bill has a passion for helping people learn and grow. During a 26 year career at NAIT, he spent several years as an instructor in preparation for a management role in Organizational Development. This role provided the opportunity to create and deliver programs in two areas of keen interest - instructor development and leadership. He has travelled extensively to deliver workshops throughout the U.S., Thailand, China, Qatar, Poland, Iran and Canada. He is currently the Manager, Staff Learning and Development at the University of Alberta, a position he has held since Feb, 2003 where is unit works extensively on leadership development, performance management, and change management initiatives. Bill says of the many and varied programs he has designed over his career, the session on Generational Differences has been the most fun as it gives as opportunity to re-examine our own behaviours and gain great insight into the behaviours of others.

Why is this Important?
More than ever before, employers and supervisors are faced with a breadth of diversity in the workplace that affects employee relationships, the work environment, and the supervisor's effectiveness. Just as you have been challenged to address gender, ethnic, cultural, and language issues a new dynamic is emerging. On any given day, a supervisor can confront differences arising from four generations - Elders, Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials.
A failure to address these differences often results in significant frustration in the workplace for supervisors and employees. The result of this frustration may be reduced productivity, higher turnover, and low employee engagement or workplace satisfaction.

What will you learn?
This workshop provides a roadmap to move from basic understanding of generational differences to how to employ strategies to respond to them. An examination of the APPROACHES each generation takes to life and work will provide clues for determining how to:
· identify and recognize fundamental differences in values
· communicate more effectively with each group

Talk to Me: Understanding Social Media Communications
Social media is getting so much attention these days that almost every company has created their own Facebook fan page and Twitter account to marketing to customers. We must however, realize that this is something completely different from traditional marketing. Your favorite show pauses and stops for advertisements. A magazine article skips pages in between paragraphs to show you print ads. Traditional marketing strategies tend to interrupt the audience experience.

Social media as a marketing tool should not be about disruption. It is about enriching, deepening, and providing more value to those who are looking for information. There must be a focus on communication and conversing with audiences, instead of pushing something to them. In this session, I'll help you understand that social media is not about the technology. It's about belonging to a community and having a conversation with people just like you. It's never about just one person or organization but everybody connected to you. We'll be discussing the different elements that define social media and why it has become popular. We will also examine some social media marketing strategies used by companies and universities, and discuss what works and what doesn't.

Speaker:  Zack Lee

Zack Lee - Marketing and Special Events Coordinator, OLT UBC
Zack coordinates the logistics for the special events that OLT is involved in such as the Canadian e-Learning Conference and the Open Education Conference. He is interested in the effects of technology on literacy and the creation of new forms of expression.

Open Space Technology Topics

1. - the impact, if any, of interest from other university offices, including the President's Office, regarding the role of conference business to the mission of the university. Has this interest been supportive, or has it interfered with business the conference office would normally undertake?

2. - Labour issues: working with affected unions to ensure the conference office can bring in the necessary number of casual employees to clean up after a group. Finding these casual employees. What are other institutions doing to address these problems? Supervising these casual employees, particularly on weekends: what do other institutions do?

3. Summer business trends - was your summer business down this summer? How has the economy impacted bed nights at your operation.

4. Tradeshows and other Pay to Play opportunities. What shows are you doing and are they worthwhile?

If you have any suggestions for round table discussion topics, please send them to Erin Walton at waltone@macewan.ca

Pay to Play or NOT!

Focus of the topic will be on marketing, participating in high-cost advertising or shows, budgeting for them and the 4- W s …

· WHY we do it?

· HOW we do it?

· WHO s doing it?

· WHAT s the ROI?

With the BOD’s focus on “what cuccoa members get for their membership” plus the “connect on campus” and “stay on campus” topics lately, join the panel to discuss “why these programs and participation is important”. When we recruit members to participate, regional directors and I find ourselves, scrambling to get people on board… Many members respond saying they can’t participate in the pay to plays because it’s not in their budget or they don’t have enough information on it…. I hope you will join me to find out more on the subject.

Peer lead session – Panel: A representative from each region lead by Linda Warner, President
